Identification & Seasonal Habitats

The Three Black Bass Species of Table Rock

Each species behaves differently, favors distinct structure, and requires specific lure presentations.

Largemouth Bass

Largemouth bass are easily identified by their upper jaw extending past the rear edge of the eye and a deep notch separating their dorsal fins. On Table Rock Lake, you will typically find them holding tight to shallow brush piles, boat docks, standing timber, and secondary creek points. They strike aggressively on topwater walking baits, Texas-rigged soft plastics, spinnerbaits, and heavy casting jigs worked through cover.

Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth bass feature a rich bronze or brownish coloration marked with distinctive dark vertical tiger bars. Unlike largemouth, their jaw does not extend past the center of the eye. They thrive in the lake's cooler, clearest sections along main-lake rocky points, gravel roll-offs, and deep bluff walls. We target them with finesse swimbaits, Ned rigs, drop-shots, and suspending jerkbaits that highlight their acrobatic fighting ability.

Spotted (Kentucky) Bass

Spotted bass, commonly known locally as Kentucky bass, display a prominent horizontal band of dark spots along their lower flanks and have a characteristic rough tooth patch on the tongue. They are gregarious pack-hunting fish that suspend over deep timber, channel drop-offs, and offshore rock humps. They provide steady action on underspins, spoons, and forward-facing sonar jig presentations worked vertically through schools.
